Counting

Today I am overwhelmed. I don’t even know where to begin.

Handsome is non-verbal, though he makes many sounds and utterances, he even has syllables and inflection. He uses signs for some things. But just like his momma, he is a words person. He loves words. He loves to spell words. He loves to look at words. He loves to listen to people when they say their words. He especially loves to listen to words that are beautifully sung. He always has.

When he was three years old, we began verbal behavior therapy. The therapist worked with him for about a year and in that year, we were able to associate 5 verbal utterances to have meaning. Shortly after that year, we began hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It was disastrous for him and Handsome lost all 5 of his sounds within the first 24 hours of beginning oxygen therapy. It would be another 4 years before he would begin making sounds again. An extremely difficult, tiresome, and weary 4 years. Five sounds. That was all we had from him and it was all gone.

Fast forward to today. We have started some new homeopathic therapies and the results are undeniable.

For the first time EVER, I heard my little boy speak actual words. He’s had sounds and utterances. These are words. Clearer than I’ve ever heard from him before.

Please listen. Please rejoice with me at the sweet sound of hearing a non-verbal child’s voice. And please excuse me while I open up another box of tissues.
